WoW Moviewatch: Stuff WoW Hipsters Say

Stuff WoW Hipsters Say by Slightly Impressive is a challenging video for me to review. The kernel idea for the video is solid. I'm actually a little surprised we haven't seen more WoW hipster videos, so this is an area ripe for the plucking.

The video just felt a little too even-keeled for me. The voice acting could have been kicked up a notch or maybe the dialogue a little tuned. Like I said, the idea for the video is solid, but the execution could use some refinement. I'd definitely recommend experimenting with character voices, since that could go a long way toward promoting a better sense of production.

4 best Blizzard customer support videos

Blizzard is a fairly tech-savvy company. You can tell on account of this huge, massive game it runs. More importantly, though, Blizzard maintains a fairly robust online presence even outside of the game. It even keeps a fully stocked, awesome YouTube channel dedicated to Customer Support.

The thing you might not realize about the videos is that they're awesome. I don't just mean that in the sense that Blizzard is putting good information out there; the videos themselves are well crafted, lots of fun, and brilliantly narrated. I'd like to make sure you're not missing out on any of the cool stuff. So let's review the best Blizzard support videos available on YouTube.

Item Restoration

The Item Restoration video above is probably my favorite video. It introduces the new Item Restoration service, which is a huge benefit all its own. The narrator really grabs this subject by the horns and runs with it. Of course, the shocked worgen is equally awesome, and I spent the day making my own shocked worgen face at myself in the mirror.

WoW Moviewatch: Another Wipe

I think we've all been there. Some nights, you just get so frustrated with your raid team that you could scream or hurl your mouse through your monitor. That's not a productive use of your emotion, of course, but you could do it.

Shadowshift Productions does something much more productive with that frustration -- it creates music. Another Wipe predictably finds its roots in difficult, annoying raid nights. For a first video, Another Wipe absolutely knocks it out of the park. The music is decent, the video is fine -- good first showing all the way around. The singing had a few broken parts, but again, not bad for a freshman attempt.

WoW Moviewatch: 28 Patches Later

While we're talking about classics, let's not forget this historic piece of boomkin video. In 28 Patches Later, the master of moonkin tackles the question you didn't know to ask: What if the world were overrun with laser chickens?

Let me summarize the video. Scientists accidentally summon a moonkin horde. They travel across the country, tearing down planes, infiltrating boats, and even taking over the White House. What is the mysterious goal of these otherworldly creatures? More important, who cares? The whole thing is just awesome, whether you're an Azeroth fan or just like to see a feathered version of zombie movies.

WoW Moviewatch: Dragonwrath: A Legendary Musical

What do you get when you cross Nananea and Sharm? A musical -- but not just any musical. You get Dragonwrath: A Legendary Musical. Set aside some time, kick your feet up, and relax with an awesome machinima that's truly a breath of fresh, beautiful air.

The plot's essentially about getting Dragonwrath, so I'm not going to belabor that. I want to focus on the amazing singing, fun lyrics, and awesome storybook style. I'm so happy to see folks revisiting these kind of productions; while I embrace all forms of machinima, this kind of music and story amalgam has always been my favorite. Dragonwrath: A Legendary Musical is an epic video that stands out in the current crop of machinima.

Zerg Rush attacks your Google search

Image
While it's not strictly World of Warcraft-related, we're obviously big fans of Blizzard around here. So it's pretty cool when search giant Google includes an Easter egg that's a direct shout-out to the company. Go to Google and search for Zerg Rush.

When you follow those simple instructions, your screen is swarmed with Os that will slowly eat up the text on your screen. Click on the Os to do battle! The better you click on the Os, the higher score you will achieve. While this probably won't quite get you over any StarCraft jones you're feeling, this little screen game is a welcome distraction in the middle of a rough work day. How well are you scoring so far?

WoW Moviewatch: The Lich King: Part 4: The Wrath Gate

This intro is going to be a little brief because I think this piece can largely stand on its own two feet. The Lich King: Part 4: The Wrath Gate is a creation of Mathew McCurley (you might have heard of him) when he asked the question, "What if Ken Burns had created a video to document the events of the Wrath Gate?"

The result is an evocative, moody piece that questions the history of Wrath of the Lich King's most memorable quests. The music is incredibly well chosen, and the low-key, laconic documentary dialogue lends the video a sense of gravitas. Check it out and let Mat know what you think.

Phat Loot Phriday: Gilnean Raven

Image
When we last left our heroes, they were packing to go to Pandaria. While Throgg and Lolegolas shove their belongings into mysterious blue boxes and bags of questionable size, let's take a jump across the pond and check in on the missing member of the precarious party. She gets cross if I ignore her for too long.

Miranda pushed herself up on her elbows, peering around her spacious cage. She noticed immediately that the bamboo enclosure smelled fairly nice. If she was trapped in captivity, at least it was a relatively tidy captivity.

"Hello?" she asked. Her voice was dry and cracked; the words came out as a croak. "Is anyone there?"

"Good morning, Miranda," someone replied. "If it helps you relax, this isn't about you at all. You'll see I even have a gift for you. I wish you to be comfortable while you serve as bait."

The shrouded figure came nearer, kneeling to slide a small bird through the cage. Miranda tried to get a look at the man, but mist and smoke kept her from making out much beside his robe.

"That's a Gilnean Raven. It might turn out to be quite the fighter. I'm certain your druid will appreciate it. This raven is quite like a writing desk."

"What is this about, then?" Miranda asked. She reached out to the bird and was pleased when it jumped to her wrist immediately. "What's going?"

The shadowed man turned back to his reading. "It's an assignment, nothing personal. I will get Throgg very angry, and while he's in the middle of his Throgg-smash routine ... I will kill him."

Phat Loot Phriday brings you the scoop on some of the most ... interesting ... loot in the World of Warcraft, often viewed through the eyes of the stalwart Throgg and indelible Lolegolas. Suggest items you think we should feature by emailing mikeg@wowinsider.com.

WoW Moviewatch: What Have You Done?

What Have You Done? is a fairly old movie; we featured it about three years ago. I had it brought back to mind this morning when I found myself in the mood for some old-fashioned boy angst rock. Nothing expresses the inner turmoil of a video game blogger like angry rock vocals and electric guitars.

That being said, I'm impressed how Keyra's video is still relatively fun. Keyra confessed she used an older computer to create the video, so the raw graphics aren't great in places. But she still nails that classic metal scene of "attractive singer walks around." I know that sounds like criticism, but it's not. What Have You Done? couldn't be more rock-and-roll video classic if the characters were crouched in front of a brick wall.

If you're looking for good bit of air guitar, don't miss this video. Your Livejournal poetry will thank you.

How to get Warcraft in your social life and news feeds

Image
So, you've just started playing the World of Warcraft, and you're thinking to yourself, "This is awesome. I love this. I'm all killing kobolds and slaying dragons. Too bad I have to work in the morning." (Or, alternatively, you might lament having to go to school in the morning.) And you think to yourself, "I spend half the day on Facebook, anyway. How can I get my Warcraft on in Facebook?"

OK, a little hyperbole there, but you get the point. Not only has Blizzard promoted its social networking channels, but I actually had a reader write in with a similar question:

What's the best places to get WoW stuff plugged into my feeds? It doesn't need to be news since I'm just using it for little diversions through the day.

So with that in mind, let's talk about how you can get Blizzard's information -- and WoW Insider's, too -- right in your social networks.
